Robert L. Gillan died Sunday, September 5, 2009 at age 93. Bob was a member of the Central Indiana Soaring Society and a mainstay of the instructional program since he joined the club in 1986. His logbook shows more than 3400 glider flights, the overwhelming majority of them as an instructor. Bob was a naval flight instructor in WWII and returned home to Indian to become a school teacher and farmer. Bob was dedicated to teaching troubled children and it was his calling to gather the under-achievers in his school district and re-cast their lives. He brought his enthusiasm for children and teaching to his instructing in gliders. His efforts for the club were many and he left an endowment to the club in support of gliding for teen-agers.
