What if there was a place where the average temperature in the winter hovered around 80 degrees F? Let’s assume that this place had a glider port with a graded, packed dirt runway, nestled in surrounding mountains. Let’s also assume that the mountain range within two clicks of the field had a 1 mile long sheer cliff that was 2,600 high, with reliable ridge lift that could launch you on a cross-country trip through spectacular mountain views (featuring a couple of groomed land out areas).

While we’re at it, let’s throw in T-hangars and a double winch for ground towing, to maximize the number of launches per hour. This place also has a UTV rental shop, so you can take the family throughout the Tonto National Forest and search for obsidian in abandoned surface mines, camping at a nearby campground. All of this is within an hour of Phoenix, AZ.

Have I piqued your interest? If we develop such a place, might you consider coming out for winter flying? Let me know!!!

I plan to come to Estrella this January with a PW-5. Looking forward to flying in the nearby mountains.

      Hello Mark,

      Id be there !

Build it and they will come.

Sounds like a pleasant place to get away from winter and Soar.

You’ll have to visit Superior Soaring’s ground launching operation (Skylaunch Winch) in Superior, AZ at E81! Beautiful views of the Tonto National Forest!

Superior, AZ. E81. See the story in the October 2023 Soaring Magazine! We have had a great response from the Town of Superior for use of this graded dirt strip that had been dormant for so long. Pilots love the abundance of ridge lift! Modern franchise motels are within 25 miles. Spartan motel accommodations and limited RV camping opportunities nearby. There are awesome hiking and ATV trails, with an ATV rental shop within a kilometer of the field. Come get a winch launch endorsement!

Superior, AZ. E81. Summer temps usually don’t get above 110f. You won’t see us there much in July! We are at 2,675 feet. Winter is beautiful. 70 – 80s.

      Mark,

Please elaborate on what double winch means. Does that mean parallel runways each with their own winch? Or a winch used for taxiing?

      Mark:
I live in Buckeye and own 2 gliders ( an ASG-29 and an ASH-25) – so I’m very interested.
      What’s this all about?

The Skylaunch EVO has two take-up drums, one on either side of the vehicle’s front. We play out the cables at the same time to the launch site. That way, if a student makes a five-minute pattern flight, the second cable is on the ground ready to return her to the air in minutes. We also could use the dual system to put two gliders in the air one right after another. When the second cable has been used, our field vehicle drives down to the launch area, connects to both cables, and brings them back to the launch area.

        Hi Roy,

I think you and I have met before. You were at Reno this year, right? If you were, you saw the Skylaunch EVO dual drum winch. We placed it at E81 in Superior Arizona and have had a blast flying over the Tonto National Forest. Come check us out! Write me at mark@aerialengagement.com and I’ll send times and dates.

Send me an email to mark@aerialengagement.com We started flying at E81 on June 12 and now have more than 700 launches under our belt. It is proving to be an exciting site with spectacular views.
