A busy day today, that included final cleaning of the trailer, glider and tow vehicle, so these could be returned in condition at least as good as when we received them. These jobs were made more challenging by temperatures that quickly climbed into the 90s, clearly headed for 100+ F.
The closing ceremony went off smoothly. It was held in the briefing hangar – a bit on the small side for the crowd gathered there and certainly not cool, but much more comfortable than would have been the case outside in the baking sun. The top 10 finishers in each class were honored: Karl & Sarah were included in 20-Meter class, receiving official diplomas for their 9th-place finish. With no flagstaffs indoors, the traditional raising of the flags of the top three pilots was done with video, that showed the correct flags creeping up the screen as the winner’s national anthem was played.
The last person called to the stage, just before the ceremony was declared over, was your US Team Captain, who received the IGC flag because the next Open / 20-Meter / 18-Meter World Gliding Championship will be in the USA: at Uvalde, Texas in 2024.
As we drove off with Arcus in tow (on its way back to Denmark) we couldn’t help noting beautiful cumulus clouds forming as what looked like remarkable altitudes. I predict another 10,000’ day in southern Hungary.
