It’s a rest day, so I thought I’d do a brief report on one of our favorite local food sources: Le 23, in the nearby town of Boussac. This is a kebab store that does takeout only, and accepts only cash (unusual generally in France, but relatively common in our area, where tourism isn’t big). It’s open until late, which makes it a go-to choice for evenings when we don’t get done with airfield duties until late (e.g. when reassembling the glider at 9pm after an outlanding).
Le 23 has the standard “vertical rotisserie” to cook the kebab meat, and a conspicuously varied menu. But sans doute the pièce de résistance is the eponymous item: Le 23 (classified as a platter). Order this and for 12 euros you get a large Styrofoam takeout box containing (from bottom to top): salad, pommes frites (French fries), kebab meat, a fried egg, and a hamburger patty. A choice of toppings is available, but the sauce algérienne is simply too good to pass up. This mouthwatering collection looks like it must amount to 3000 calories, and easily makes two meals. Thought I question just how healthy – or traditionally French – it can be considered, it sure is good.
