AOPA members are invited to apply for primary and advanced flight training scholarships, made possible through donations to the AOPA Foundation. The purpose of the Women’s Soaring Pilots Association is to encourage women to fly gliders. One way we do this is through our scholarship program. Applicants are required to be members of WSPA and, if living in the U.S., members of SSA. Scholarships are offered to women of all skill levels, from beginning students to advanced licensed pilots. Persons interested in applying for a scholarship should review the list below and select the scholarship that best meets their needs. Applicants may submit only one application per year. Funds must be used within 18 months of scholarship award. Most scholarships can be used at any club or commercial operation.

Flight training will be conducted by the Tidewater Soaring Society at the Garner Airport in Isle of Wight County. It is named after the first “utility” training glider in production, built for “air-minded youth” of the 1930s. The Cadet featured an enclosed fuselage and landing wheel, reasonable soaring performance yet rugged construction: an all-in-one beginner’s glider. On July 2, 1930, a Cadet made the first soaring flight from Harris Hill, Elmira, NY. Jack O’Meara’s one-and-a-half hours in the air cemented the choice of the site for the first National Glider Contest that Fall. The National Soaring Museum stands there today. Winners of scholarships and several smaller prizes are selected each year from young non-pilot applicants who visit a USA gliderport and make a good case for their desire to learn to fly, financial need, and promise in other aspects of life.

The Kolstad College Scholarship is intended to help finance college-level study and is to be paid directly to an academic institution of the applicant’s choice.
